Everything you ever wanted to know about moving your piano

As experienced piano movers, we understand the importance of keeping your piano safe during your move. Read through our frequently asked questions about piano moving for a better idea of how the process works and what you should know!

What information do I need to have before I call a piano mover?

  • The type of piano to be moved. The 3 main types of pianos are upright, grand, and console (not as tall as an upright).
  • If the piano is a grand, the length measured from the keyboard to the curve in the bow end.
  • The address where the piano is located, and the address where it is being delivered.
  • Any stairs, turns or landings, inside or outside of both locations.
  • Requested move date.
  • Any special needs or circumstances.

Are all piano movers insured?

No. Make sure the piano mover you hire is licensed, bonded and insured. Your piano mover should be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation. West Coast Piano Moving and Storage is licensed, bonded and insured as well as being registered with USDOT.

How will you move my piano?

West Coast Piano Moving and Storage uses modern equipment combined with knowledge and experience for the specific piano to be moved. Usually, it takes 2 people to move a piano with the proper equipment. In some cases, it will require 3 or 4 people. Each move is as individual as you are. We take the time and care to ensure that your move is successful.

What size truck will be used for my move?

Our trucks have an overall length of over 20 feet.

Will my piano need to be tuned after being moved?

Moving your piano doesn’t affect the tuning of your piano. However, temperature, humidity, and room size can affect the sound. We suggest that you have your piano tuned once it has been in its new location for 3 to 4 weeks.

Can you store my piano, and what is the cost?

We have a secure, climate-controlled storage facility. We store pianos on a long-term and short-term basis. Our storage rate is $40.00 per month for an upright, and $50.00 per month for a grand, prorated on a monthly basis. Call for more storage pricing.
