Long Distance Moving: 5 Tips to Make It an Adventure

It is no secret that moving can be a very stressful and costly time in people’s lives. When you throw an out-of-state or long-distance move into the mix, the stress load is doubled. Not to say that moving to an entirely new place isn’t something to be excited about! There are so many different adventures and experiences to discover at your new home, that give you something to look forward to. What you probably didn’t realize is that you can make the move a vacation, too! Here are 5 tips to help make your long distance move into an adventure:

Research: Depending on where you currently live and where you are moving to, you could be crossing through multiple states and cities. If you plan your move accordingly, you could turn it into a vacation for the whole family to enjoy. Research online or buy a travel book for previewing what sites, attractions, and restaurants that you may be passing along the way. You never know what you might find!

Plan: Once you have discovered all the jewels on the way to your new home, make a plan. When are the moving trucks coming to haul all of your stuff? How fast are they planning on getting there? If you are in communication with your moving company and can make a plan around both moving days, you can budget your time accordingly for extending your trip to your new house. This will help eliminate some stress and will add some fun into the mix of moving!

Utilize: Have any reward programs that you’ve been saving up for a special occasion? Instead of staying at cheap motels that you find along the way, maybe use up your hotel rewards and stay at nice resorts or fun hotels that have activities or sites nearby. This can help keep the cost down while making the trip enjoyable and comfortable at the same time.

Fun: As much excitement and opportunity that a move brings, it also can bring about feelings of anxiety, especially when kids are involved! They might have uncertain feelings about leaving their friends, moving to a new school, having to make new friends and getting used to their new surroundings. Adventure along the road is a great way to distract them and to set them up thinking that the whole process of moving is fun.

New City: Don’t have time to make a pit stop along the way to your new house? Drive straight to your new city and spend some time exploring before you have to really get down to the hard work of unpacking and moving. Find where your favorite restaurants are or where your local grocery store is. Any attractions there? Go see them and see what else your city has to offer. This will get you and your kids excited about your new location!
